Whatever the reason for changing your career, it is a brave step to pivot and pursue something completely different. We all have aspirations, whether to start our own business, move to the other side of the world, pursue a new role, shift industries, or return to the workplace after a break. Some things to consider are:
1) Do your research: look at the market and see if the direction you are considering is feasible. Are these roles even viable? Can I make a career out of this? How competitive is this sector, job role or marketplace? Information is key to informed decision-making.
2) Qualifications or certifications: explore if any professional development is required and, if so, how long it will take to study and what the cost is. In today's digital world, there are so many different options to upskill; sometimes, it is just about having an awareness of the topic and in other cases, a formal qualification is required.
3) Make a plan: having a career strategy is crucial as this maps out the path, timeline and direction. Nothing is cast in stone, and it needs to be flexible, but it is an essential part of any career change or transition.
4) Be determined: this is one of the hardest but most rewarding changes you will undertake, so ensure you are ready and have the emotional resilience to keep going, even when you feel like you are treading tar and not moving forward.
5) Ask an expert (career coach or mentor), colleague or friend: garnishing opinions allows you to know if you are on the right track, and allows you to make the right choices. It is not about being told what to do, but having vital support is invaluable.
